Widecombe Gingerbread

That Widecombe in Devon has had an annual fair for at least 150 years is well known. And that gingerbread is often sold there is also well known. But the only receipt we can find for this dainty may not be at all original.. Can you help? editor@foodsofengland.co.uk

WIDECOMBE FAIR GINGERBREAD
Ingredients: 5 ounces butter; 6 ounces flour; 1 teaspoonful ginger; 6 ounces treacle; 6 ounces sugar.
Rub butter into flour and add sugar and ginger. Warm the treacle and mix in well. Drop small pieces on a well-greased tin and bake in a moderate oven for 30 to 40 minutes.
